We do not own nature, but borrow it from future generations. That is what indigenous people believe. They respect nature as it provides them with food, cultural identity and livelihood. But due to climate change they see their environment changing rapidly. ‘We have exploited nature for too long and now it is hitting back hard.’

Description

Due to the warming of the sea water, the volume and thickness of the sea ice decrease further every year. In addition, the sea ice period is getting shorter, in spring the ice melts earlier while in autumn it freezes later. Where the white ice reflects sunlight, the dark ocean water absorbs it, causing even more ice to melt and the water to absorb even more heat. The melting of the sea ice therefore increases the warming in the polar region.
